📍Ouro Preto - This is another one of those places in Brazil that is popular with locals but doesn't see many foreign tourists. It's a very pretty town with a rich history.

Ouro Preto was founded by the Portuguese when they found gold here. Ouro Preto means black gold, and the name comes from the gold covered in a layer of iron oxide found here. It became the center of the gold rush and grew out to be the most populous city in Latin America in the 18th century. As the city grew and slaves were brought here to help with the gold digging, many churches were built as well. There were different churches for different groups of inhabitants.

I loved wandering the streets early in the morning. The light was just perfect, and there weren't many people around in the old town early in the day. Since Ouro Preto was built in the mountains, the streets are quire steep, so the fact that it's less hot in the morning is another reason to venture out early in the day.

The main sights are the churches, the gold mines, and of the course, the streets and houses itself. Unfortunately, there are no free walking tours offered in town, but I found a very helpful audio guide that allowed me to learn a little more about what I was seeing and give the city perspective. And on a tour of a gold mine, I learned a bit more about the mining practices as well.

Are you curious about Ouro Preto and want to learn more about this pretty mountain town? Head over to the blog for my Ouro Preto Travel Guide where you can also find the audio guide.

📍Ilha Grande - Our last beach destination in Brazil of the trip. Ilha Grande is a popular destination, both with locals and foreign visitors due to its proximity to the city of Rio de Janeiro. Ilha Grande is full of pretty beaches, some with easy access, some remote and only accessible by boat.

We chose to hike to some of Ilha Grande's best beaches since it was July when we visited (winter in Brazil) and not as hot and humid as in summer. That doesn't mean it wasn't hot or humid, just less compared to summer. 🙈

We first hiked to Dois Rios (two rivers), a beach which is bordered by (as the name suggests) two rivers (photos 1-6). The hike is quite easy, mainly over a dirt road, and passes by a nice viewpoint over the harbor at Ilha Grande's biggest town (Abraão). Next, we hiked to Lopes Mendes beach, known as Ilha Grande's best beach. This hike is longer and more challenging but passes by several other gorgeous beaches, perfect for a break (photos 7-11).

If you don't feel like hiking, you can also take a taxi boat to several beaches on the island, or just stay at the closest beach to your accommodation, a pretty beach will never be far away on Ilha Grande. 🏖

For more info about the hikes we did, other things to do in Ilha Grande, or about traveling to Ilha Grande in general head over to the blog (link in bio) where you'll find a comprehensive travel guide.

Ubatuba is another popular coastal retreat for locals. While it has a bit more fame amongst foreigners than Maresias, it still sees relatively few foreign travelers. Most people visiting Ubatuba come here to surf, but there are plenty of pretty beaches to visit around Ubatuba for non-surfers, too. While the main beach in town is not very impressive (we considered hopping on the first bus back to Maresias when we arrived 🙈), there are beautiful beaches just a short distance from town.
We especially loved the Trilha das 7 Praias (the 7 beaches hike, photo 1-9), which is very easily accessible from Ubatuba center by bus. (See the blog for a detailed guide on how to hike the Trilha das 7 Praias, including how to get there.)
Another beach we absolutely loved was Praia do Cedro (photo 10-12), to which you can hike from Ubatuba town.

Maresias is a beach town along the coast of São Paulo I would have never heard of if it wasn't for locals. It's a popular destination for people from São Paulo, but for foreigners, it's a hidden gem! What I liked most of Maresias is its accessibility to a beautiful beach right from town. In front of the town center you'll find all the comfort you need. There are beach chairs and umbrellas for rent and you can buy cold drinks at a bar or order a delicious açai. Walk a little further to Canto do Moreira, and you'll have the feeling you're at a completely different and virgin beach miles away from town.
In the hills around Maresias you'll find waterfalls and hiking trails. Or visit a viewpoint or another beach. There are plenty of things within easy access from Maresias.

After spending some time in the lovely countryside of Porto Alegre it was time to move on and explore something new again. First stop: Ilha do Mel. Ilha do Mel is a lovely small island just of the coast of Curitiba in the South of Brazil. While the island is popular with locals, it's still off the radar of foreign visitors. There are no motorized vehicles allowed on the island, so getting around is by foot, bike, or boat. We opted for the walking option and hiked all around the island from the town of Encantadas (photo 12) in only two days! Since we visited in winter (June 2024), it was perfect hiking weather, but a little cold for swimming. But I very much enjoyed just walking along the stunning beaches and up the viewpoints just overlooking the peace and tranquility of the island in winter. 🏝 The three most iconic places to visit are the lighthouse (photo 3), the fortress (photo 6) and the cave (photo 8 & 9), but I enjoyed the journey to each one of these places at least as much as the destination!
For more info about Ilha do Mel and how to get here, check out the blog!

I love traveling to new places and exploring more of the world. But I love returning to places of which I have special memories just as much. Like Rio Grande do Sul in the south of Brazil. We spent 3 months here during covid working with horses and this place holds a special place in my heart. So it was amazing to be able to come back here 4 years later and celebrate my birthday here again. Different Haras, different horses, same and new friends. ❤️ Thank you @edsonwisniewki for welcoming us back again.

This other special place that I mentioned in my previous post is the Jardin de los Picaflores: an oasis in the buzzing Puerto Iguazu. The owners here spent years investing in their garden, making it as attractive as possible for hummingbirds. Despite the fact that this garden is only small and located in right in the city, it is full of hummingbirds and many other types of birds. It's an amazing place to just sit, relax, and watch the birds fly around. I've never seen so many different types of hummingbirds and just couldn't get enough of observing and photographing them!

They have cards available showing the different types of hummingbirds and are happy to answer any questions. A must-visit for anyone who visits Puerto de Iguazu and would love to see hummingbirds up close. ❤️

The Iguazu Falls (Cataratas del Iguazu is Spanish, Cataratas do Iguaçu in Portuguese) are the most amazing waterfalls I've ever got to see! The Iguazu Falls are made up for many different waterfalls, and together, they make up the biggest waterfall system in the world. This, plus their beautiful setting in the lush jungle on the border of Brazil and Argentina, full of different kinds of animals make it seem like a place directly from a fairytale.
Iguazu National Park is divided into an Argentine side and a Brazilian side. They have separate entrances, fees, and trails. The trail and viewpoint on the Brazilian side give an amazing panorama over the falls, whereas the Argentine side offers more trails and more up close experiences. The best part of the Argentine side is definitely "La Garganta del Diablo" as long as you don't mind getting wet at least. 😉 Unfortunately, this trail was closed when we last visited in 2024 and prices had increased considerably as well, so we decided to skip the Iguazu Falls this time and hopefully visit it again next time we're around. The pictures of this post are from my first visit back in 2020, less than a year into my adventure after quiting my office job.
We did visit the "Triple frontera" (triple frontier) in Puerto Iguazu from where you can see both Brazil and Paraguay (photos 17 & 18) and another very special place I will post about next time.

We did visit the "Triple frontera" (triple frontier) in Puerto Iguazu from where you can see both Brazil and Paraguay (photos 17 & 18) and another very special place I will post about next time.

Los Esteros del Iberá is full of wildlife, but what we most saw was birds. Beautiful birds in the widest variery. From the tiny stange-tailed tyrant, displayed on the emblem of the Esteros del Ibera National Park, to the much bigger Southern Screamer and everything in between. Colorful or brown, rare or widespread, waterfowl or those who prefer dry feet, they all built a home in this beautiful little corner of the world. Some we only got to see during our trips out in the reserve or national park, but many came to visit us at @ecoposada Here's a selection of the many birds we got to see during our stay in the Ibera Wetlands. 🐦🦜❤️
