📍Lanzarote - PN Los Volcanes isn't the only place in Lanzarote with volcanoes, the whole island is dotted with volcanic craters and calderas. Volcan de la Corona in the north is one of the most popular and beautiful ones since it's so green! A huge contrast to the generally barren landscape of this island.
We also hikes some random volcanoes, like a red one with views over La Graciosa we stumbled across driving north from the little town of La Santa where we were staying. And one next to La Santa, perfect to watch the sunset from 🌅

📍Parque Natural de los Volcanes, Lanzarote Most people who visit Lanzarote visit Timanfaya National Park. But the idea of waiting in line for hours to be let in and pay quite a lot of money just to be driven around in a bus with dusty windows didn't sound that appealing to us. Especially after meeting people who had done it confirmed my expectations. So we skipped Timanfaya, researched a little more and did some amazing free hikes in the surrounding Parque Natural de los Volcanes. Caldera Blanca gave especially incredible views over the park, and Timanfaya in the background. But I also loved visiting Caldera de los Cuervos around sunset and searching for the hidden lava tunnel Cueva de Ortiz. .

📍Cartagena, Colombia 🇨🇴 We finished our Colombia trip in Cartagena. Cartagena is far from my favorite place in Colombia, there are much nicer and more laid back colonial towns in Colombia like Mompox (see one of my previous posts), but I did enjoy wandering the streets early in the morning just after sunrise before the streets filled up with people and the heat and humidity became to much for me. The old city is indeed very pretty, especially when you have it almost to yourself. We stayed outside of the old city. Which was a bit more quiet and especially much cheaper so when it started to get hot and crowded and passed by parque centenario for a glimpse of the monkeys and sloths living there before heading back inside our air conditioned accommodation, preparing for our flight out the next day. #colombiatravel #cartagenadeindias #cartagena #travelblogger #travelphotography

📍Cabo de la Vela, Colombia 🇨🇴
Tired of the Colombian humidity, but not of the Colombian beaches, we headed further East to the remote Cabo de la Vela. This small community is known as a kite-hot spot, but other than that it doesn't attract many tourists. I doubted on wether to include it in our Colombia itinery of 2024, since I did a tour of the La Guajira peninsula in 2019 and I didn't love it. But I have to say that the DIY was very different and much more enjoyable. Also since we stopped at Cabo de la Vela whereas the tour continued further East so we spent a lot more time in a car on a bumpy road. In 2024 we decided to stay a few nights in Cabo, visiting a few beaches in the area and just relaxing. Cabo kind of forces you to do that, because there isn't much around and there are only a few hours of electricity a day meaning forced disconnection which was actually very nice.

📍Los Cocos, Colombia 🇨🇴
After Tayrona, we weren't quite ready to leave Colombia's "jungle meets sea" beaches. So we spent a few days at Los Cocos enjoying more of this tropical vibe. Los Cocos is local, quiet, and perfect for relaxing. Unfortunately the sea wasn't as good for swimming, or at least not when we were there, so I spent the hotest time of the day working indoors and enjoyed the cooler early morning and late afternoons at the beach. Especially sunrise and sunset are the perfect times for a relaxing stroll along the beach admiring the gorgeous colorpalet.

📍Tayrona National Park, Colombia 🇨🇴
Tayrona is one of those places that stays with you, even as it changes I've visited on my first trip to Colombia back in 2019, and again on my second trip in 2024. This time it left me with mixed feelings. We took a different route, hiking from the Calabazo entrance to the Zaino entrance, whereas in 2019 I walked from Zaino and back. The trail from Calabazo to Cabo San Juan still feels very natural, although it's tough with 2 hills to climb in the heat and high humidity levels until reaching Cabo. We planned to stay here, but when we arrived it felt too busy and commercial to us, plus they had run out of hammocks. So after a quick dip in the water and a cold juice we continued until we found a small campsite, not quite on the beach but not far either. From here we could easily walk to a stunning beach which was good for swimming (a rarity in Tayrona) with only a handful of people. It was perfect! Tayrona hasn’t lost its magic entirely, you just have to look a bit harder. The next day we enjoyed the beach in the morning before continuing to the Zaino entrance and suddenly the hills we had to conquer the day before didn't seem so bad anymore... The trail was much easier than the day before, almost flat in comparison, but also much busier. There were many people, hikers and horses alike, and the path had turned muddy and trampled. It didn't feel nearly as natural as the first part. Overall I did still enjoy the trip to Tayrona very much, despite the demanding climb on the first day and the crowded, muddy path on the second: staying overnight on the quiet campsite with birdsong and sunset and sunrise on an almost empty, gorgeous beach made it worth it. But if you're planning to go, make sure to manage your expectations and look for the right place to stay for you.

📍Minca, Colombia 🇨🇴
Minca is another one of those places in Colombia perfect to slow down and appreciate your surroundings. Minca isn't as sleepy or off the beaten track as Mompox and RincĂłn del Mar and many tourists visit the coffee and cacao farms and waterfalls around town. Some come for a day trip, others stay for a night or two and might me rewarded with one of Minca's spectacular sunsets.
We stayed a few nights at one of those coffee and cacao farms, about 30 minutes walk out of town and it was the perfect place to experience Minca. From gorgeous views to spectacular sunsets and from learning about coffee and cacao to birdwatching and looking out for other small life around.
Minca offers much more, there are more hikes to viewpoints you can you, more coffee and cacao farms to visit and more watefalls to dip in. But we spent the majority of our time at this little piece of paradise, continuing the slow pace which we were enjoying so much.

📍 Rincón del Mar, Colombia 🇨🇴 From one sleepy town, we headed to another. After the slow rhythms of Mompox, Rincón del Mar felt like a natural next stop. A small, quiet coastal village which almost feels disconnected from the rest of the world. Rincón del Mar is not about ticking off sights, but about slowing down and settling into the pace. Days here are best spent on the beach. Long, open, and still largely untouched with natural shade and calm water that’s actually perfect for swimming, something that isn’t a given along Colombia’s coast. No strong currents, no crowds, just warm water and space to slow down and relax. This doesn't mean there is nothing else to do here at all. You can join a sunset tour to a bird island and swim with plankton in the afternoon, or hop on a boat visiting the San Bernardo Islands.
If you’re looking for a low-key beach escape in Colombia, far from the busy resort towns, Rincón del Mar is well worth considering. #rincondelmar #colombiatravel #southamericatravel #travelblogger #colombiaoffthebeatenpath

📍 Mompox, Colombia 🇨🇴 Mompox feels a bit like a smaller, quieter Cartagena: The same colonial charm and colorful streets, but without the crowds or the rush. Life here is slowpaced. I loved wandering through town in the early mornings, before the midday heat. Or enjoying a drink or an ice cream in the late afternoon, sitting or strolling along the Madalena river enjoying the best of Mompox: Nature. Just outside town, you’ll find wetlands full of birds, monkeys, and lizards, making Mompox feel like a rare mix of history and nature. And even the riverbanks in this sleepy town are full of life, especially early in the day. Every day I'd cross paths with several birds and lizards just walking to the center from our hotel. It’s not a place that shouts for attention, which is probably why it's still under the rader. This town gently pulls you in. If you’re looking for somewhere different in Colombia, somewhere to wind down and escape the crowds, this town is worth the detour. Wanna visit? I’ve shared more about what to do in Mompox, including trips into the surrounding nature, on my blog 👉 wanderingnomada.com #mompox #santacruzdemompox #colombiahiddengems
