📍Mount Pico - Pico island in the Azores is home to Portugal's highest peak: Mount Pico. Being the highest peak on an island in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, Mount Pico is often hidden in the clouds, but we were lucky enough to be able to go up on a super clear dat and enjoy the amazing views over Pico Island and neighboring Faial. We got to take our time enjoying the views along the way, from the top and the crater, from where we saw lots of small bats flying around in daytime. Right up until the end of the afternoon it stayed all clear, just as we were on our way down, the clouds started to roll in. So lucky! We were able to pick the clearest day .

📍Sao Miguel - While the volcanic lakes are the most iconic feature of Sao Miguel, there's much more to see here. Think waterfalls, viewpoints over a rugged coastline, Europes only tea plantations, natural pools, and my personal favorite: a hot natural pool in the ocean. Just find a warm spot, grab a line and relax in the warm sea water.

📍São Miguel 🌸 After visiting the Canary Islands and Madeira we continued our island hopping trip in the Azores. I love how different these islands are. They are super green, but in a different way than the greener Canary Islands and Madeira. And I loved how many beautiful lakes there were on São Miguel 😍 which is something we didn't see much in the Canary Islands, or even on Madeira. 💦

📍Madeira is not just waterfalls, this island has an amazing coastline as well. Madeira isn't famous for it's beaches (neighboring Porto Santo is much better for a beach holiday), but the roughed coastline is gorgeous. Visit some of the viewpoints dotted around the island, cute little coastal towns like Ponta del Sol and do the popular Vereda da Ponta de São Lourenço hike (PR8).

📍Madeira - Madeira had been on my wish list for quite a while until we finally made the trip there. From lush levada hikes to cliffs where water drops straight into the Atlantic, the island is full of little moments that make you stop and look twice. It’s not just beautiful in a postcard way, it feels alive, green, and sometimes a little wild. That’s exactly what makes it so memorable. Madeira is far from undiscovered though, so it's good to manage your expectations when you go. We traveled there in May, thinking it would still be low season, but the most famous trails where very crowded already. A stark contrast with the Canary Islands we just came from, which are at their quietest this time of the year! 📍El Hierro - In my last post I shared El Hierro's most iconic place: El Sabinar. But there is so much more to this little island. I was very surprised with how much there is to see and do on the second smallest Canary Island. From stunning natural pools to a rugged coastline with crashing waves and beautiful rockformations to viewpoints from where you can see some of the other islands. Add lush forest, charming little towns and some friendly donkeys and you have a little piece of paradise. 😍 A lot of people overlook El Hierro, but it's definately worth visiting. It's incredibly diverse for such a small island and super easy to get around if you have a car, since everything is close. 📍El Sabinar, El Hierro El Sabinar is probably the most iconic place on the small Canarian island El Hierro. The juniper trees here have been shaped by the strong trade wind over many years, which is why they grow bent and twisted instead of straight. You can simply drive over here or do a circular hike. The PR-EH9 route starts at Ermita de Nuestra Señora de los Reyes andis around 7 km long. It’s a really nice walk because it takes you through El Sabinar and also gives you views of the coast, the volcanic landscape, and the surrounding farmland.

📍La Gomera From La Palma we went to the small island of La Gomera. It's small, but you still need to calculate some time to get around since basically all roads lead to the center of the island, from where you can change direction. This is due to the many steep barrancos of the island. So be prepared for driving along many windy mountain roads, but with stunning views along the way. La Gomera is a great island for hikers, with almost endless trails and trail combinations. I can't say La Gomera is my favorite Canary Island, it lacks the diversity or just that extra wow-factor many other islands do have. But I still enjoyed the hikes we did, mainly in the forest, but also a coastal hike to a remote beach. If you want to visit La Gomera, I highly recommend visiting in spring. The flowers along the trails give it a special touch and it's also the quiest season in the Canary Islands in general, so you'll find the fewest crouds on the roads and the trails.
