We’ve stayed on all three, and found that they really are very different from each other. The Gili Islands: what to expect
The Gili Islands are a small group of three tiny islands just off the coast of Lombok. Despite their size, they’ve become one of the most popular destinations in Indonesia and it’s not hard to see why.
All three islands share the same stunning turquoise water, white sandy beaches, and relaxed island vibe. The water here is remarkably calm compared to the bigger nearby islands like Bali and Lombok or even Nusa Penida, making them perfect for swimming and snorkeling. The snorkeling here really is exceptional. Colorful coral reefs sit just offshore, and turtles are so common here that spotting one feels less like a lucky encounter and more like a guarantee.
What they don’t all share, though, is their character and the differences are bigger than you’d expect from three tiny islands.
I’d spend a couple of nights at all three and follow this Gili Islands itinerary. But if you only have time for one or just prefer to make your base on one island, keep reading because choosing the right one matters more than you’d think.

Gili Trawangan (Gili T.) - The buzzing party island
Gili T. is the biggest and most popular of the three islands and has a reputation for being a party island. The streets buzz with people walking, cycling, riding electric scooters and horse carriages, and the coastline is lined with beach bars, souvenir shops, tour agencies and spas. There are quieter corners on the northern and western sides of the island, but overall Gili T. is the most built-up and saturated of the three.
The snorkeling here is excellent. Grass meadows just off the northeastern coast attract a huge number of turtles, and of all the spots we snorkeled across the three islands, this is where we saw by far the most. There are coral reefs around the island too, so you get plenty of variety. And since Gili T. is the westernmost island of the group, it has the best sunsets of the three. Almost every beach bar on the island offers a happy hour at sunset, so finding a great spot to sit back with a drink and watch the sky turn orange is never a problem.

Gili Meno - The quiet honeymoon island
Gili Meno is the smallest, quietest and emptiest of the Gili’s and known as the honeymoon island. Most people only visit on a day trip, as word goes around that there is nothing to do here, but we’d push back on that. Gili Meno has everything you need, just not in overwhelming quantities.
There is accommodation ranging from resort to simple homestay and there are beach bars, restaurants, and places to rent snorkel gear from. It’s just all a little more spread out and with a more peaceful vibe.
The most popular thing to do on Gili Meno is snorkeling at the Bask Nest statues (a circle of submerged human figures in front of the Bask Gili Meno resort). Get there early to avoid the tour groups that arrive later in the day. Beyond the statues, you’ll find coral reefs and plenty of turtles around the island too.
On land, Gili Meno is where you come to actually switch off. Empty beaches shaded by trees rather than lined with beach bars, the sound of waves instead of music, and a pace that makes the other two islands feel hectic by comparison. There’s even a lake in the middle of the island if you fancy a peaceful stroll away from the beach altogether.

Gili Air - The family island everyone likes
Gili Air is like Gili T.’s little brother. It has a similar setup with beach bars, restaurants, souvenir shops, spas, just with less of everything and a more relaxed atmosphere. It sits comfortably in the middle ground between the buzzing energy of Gili T. and the untouched quiet of Gili Meno, which is probably why it’s the one that (almost) everyone ends up loving.
The snorkeling at Gili Air is arguably the best of the three for coral. We found some of the most colorful and lively reefs of our entire Gili Islands trip just off the shore here, with an impressive variety of fish and of course turtles. The one trade-off of Gili Air is the sunset. Due to Gili Air’s position, the other islands block the sun before it fully drops below the horizon, so you won’t get the same dramatic sunset views as on Gili T. The colors are still beautiful though.

Our verdict: which Gili island is our favorite?
As you can see, there really is a perfect Gili Island for everyone, the three of them are quite distinct from each other. They all have their pros and cons, so if you have the time, we’d highly recommend spending a few nights on all three and following our Gili Islands itinerary.
Having said that, our overall favorite was definitely Gili Meno, because we loved the connection with nature. The other two are quite built-up and when we imagined the Gili’s, we imagined ourselves underneath a tree on a white beach and snorkeling with turtles and over corals. Gili Meno offers exactly that.
Don’t be put off by people telling you to not stay here because there is nothing there. Most of them haven’t actually stayed on Gili Meno and are just repeating what others have told them. Every traveler we’ve met who skipped it based on that advice was disappointed when we told them what they’d missed.

Three islands, three very different experiences and the choice really comes down to what kind of trip you’re after. Gili Trawangan is the island for those who want a lively, social atmosphere with plenty of bars, shops and entertainment. Gili Meno is for those who want to truly disconnect with empty beaches, nature, and peace and quiet. And Gili Air sits right in the middle, offering a relaxed but well-equipped island that suits almost everyone.

All three islands offer great snorkeling, but each has its highlight. Gili Trawangan has the most turtles, particularly on the grass meadows off the northeastern coast. Gili Meno has the famous Bask Nest underwater statues, surrounded by corals and turtles. And Gili Air has arguably the best coral reefs of the three, with the most variety of fish. So which Gili island is best for snorkeling depends on what you’re after: turtles, statues or corals.
Gili Meno has the most natural and empty beaches of the three, with trees for shade instead of beach bars and umbrellas. If you prefer a beach with more facilities and atmosphere, Gili Trawangan and Gili Air both have well-equipped beachfronts lined with more bars and restaurants.
Gili Air is widely considered the family island. It has plenty of facilities and things to do, but without the party atmosphere of Gili Trawangan. All three islands are suitable for families, but Gili Air strikes the best balance.
It depends on what kind of couple you are. Gili Meno is the classic choice for honeymooners and couples seeking romance or seclusion. But couples who enjoy a livelier atmosphere with more restaurant and bar options will likely prefer Gili Air or Gili T.
Small speedboats connect all three islands throughout the day, roughly every hour. The crossing takes just a few minutes between neighboring islands and costs around 85.000 Rp (at the time of writing). No advance booking needed, just show up at the pier. We’d recommend a minimum of two nights on each island, regardless of which one you choose. That gives you enough time to properly settle in, explore and snorkel without feeling rushed.
Gili Trawangan is the best choice for a single day since it has the most turtles. Which for many is the main reason to visit the Gili Islands. If you’re after something quieter or corals are your main priority, Gili Air is a good alternative. Most people visit Gili Meno as a day trip specifically for the underwater statues, but we’d argue it’s better appreciated as an overnight stay.
